Handicapper and Winner’s Edge contributor Greg Dempson has a few plays circled from today’s NCAA hoops card, including this one that tips off at 5:30ET. It’s game #756 if you’re checking your rotational schedule, between Georgia Tech and Virginia.

On Tuesday night the Yellow Jackets defeated Clemson in triple overtime, 89-86. They attempted 25 free throws, missing 13 of those attempts. That’s difficult to do for a Div 1 program, let alone a mediocre high school program. Georgia Tech has been hit hard with injuries and that might be a problem here. O’Brien (foot) last played on December 18 and is out indefinitely. Reeves Jr. (ankle) last played November 27, Mustafa (undisclosed) last played on January 14, Onwuchekwa (personal) last took the floor December 15 and McCollum (head) was injured in their Tuesday contest against Clemson. This is a beat up roster.
Virginia has owned these meetings going back a while now, having won the last 12 meetings with Georgia Tech. As referenced above, if this one comes down to free throws in the final few possessions, the Cavaliers have the edge there, hitting at a 74% clip, while vs. 66% for the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech was on the floor for 55 minutes vs. the Tigers earlier this week, and with all their injuries, depth will be a problem vs. that tenacious defense that the Cavaliers possess.
