Losing to mediocre, and sometimes sub-.500 opponents, on a regular basis has become the Chiefs thing this season. Or more accurately, losing to them right up until they don’t. Blocked field goals, missed field goals, inexplicable fumbles..all have saved KC from virtually certain defeat. Not sure how many more “a win is a win” interviews Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Andy Reid can give. They’re a tough team to ask to cover a spread these days.
The way we’re going with this one though, we’re hoping the post-game commentary is more like, “we knew we could pull away from teams with a convincing win”, and “we’re starting to round into shape, and this week’s big win was just the start of us getting prepared for our Super Bowl run”, etc. This has been a charmed season for KC, which you can look at two ways. Charmed in that they’re on a magical run of winning, with one bump (in Buffalo), or charmed in what we’re highlighting above. They’ve needed a ton of luck to not be sitting here with four losses (at least), and the football world questioning if they’re witnessing the end of the dynasty. Both can be true.
The charmed season analogy can also apply, somewhat, to the Chargers as well. They’re going to be a playoff team in Coach Harbaugh’s first season running the show. It’s been almost all positive for a franchise that isn’t used to things working out for them. So that’s the backdrop for this AFC West matchup.
The nagging issue we have is with the LA offense. An LA offense missing JK Dobbins. With a beat up Ladd McConkey. This offense has not impressed at all since Dobbins has been out. Do you think it’s going to spike up facing this Spagnuolo defense. The Chiefs defense hasn’t been great lately either, but they have the ability to be good, and very good vs. a weak offense. We’re wondering how they sustain drives if McConkey can’t get separation (he’s the only Charger receiver that can), and an anemic run game. Even with some recent sputtering, KC’s good against the run (third-ranked run defense). Isiah Pacheco is settling back in for Kansas City, and he can be a factor here. We’re backing the Chiefs to break the streak of not covering and get a win by more than four points.
Play: We like the Chiefs.
